US Iran drone incident tensions intensified in the strategically critical Oman Sea after the US military shot down an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle that approached an American aircraft carrier. The incident marks one of the most serious direct encounters between Washington and Tehran in recent months and comes amid heightened regional military activity.
According to information shared by US officials with Reuters, the confrontation occurred while the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier was conducting routine patrol operations in international waters of the Oman Sea. An Iranian-made drone reportedly moved toward the carrier in what US authorities described as an “aggressive and unsafe manner.”
F-35 Fighter Jet Intervened
US officials confirmed that the drone was identified as an Iranian Shahed-139 UAV. As the aircraft carrier’s defense protocols were activated, a US Navy F-35 fighter jet already conducting a security patrol in the area intercepted the drone and destroyed it midair.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) later stated that the action was taken strictly under self-defense rules of engagement, emphasizing that the drone’s intent was unclear and posed a potential threat to the carrier and its crew.
“No US personnel were injured, and no American equipment was damaged during the engagement,” CENTCOM said in an official statement.
White House Confirms Defensive Action
The White House addressed the incident shortly after it became public. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed that CENTCOM authorized the shootdown after determining the drone was acting aggressively.
“The USS Abraham Lincoln and its crew were protected under established defensive protocols,” Leavitt said. “The President remains committed to diplomacy, but mutual restraint is essential.”
Separate Incident in the Strait of Hormuz Raises Alarm
The drone incident occurred on the same day reports emerged that six Iranian fast-attack boats, armed with heavy machine guns, approached a US-linked oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. According to US media, the boats ordered the tanker to stop and prepared for boarding.
The tanker reportedly increased speed and escaped the situation under the escort of a US warship, later heading toward a US naval base in Bahrain.
Iran Reacts: “Psychological Warfare”
While Tehran has not officially commented on the drone shootdown, Iranian Revolutionary Guard deputy commander Ahmad Vahidi dismissed the presence of US naval forces in the region as “psychological warfare.”
“This is not a new situation,” Vahidi said. “All enemy movements are under constant surveillance, and Iran’s military readiness is far higher than during previous regional conflicts.”
Rising Military Activity in a Sensitive Region
Military analysts note that the location of the incident—close to Iran’s strategic security perimeter—has significantly raised alert levels across the region. The Oman Sea and Strait of Hormuz remain among the world’s most sensitive maritime corridors, carrying a large portion of global energy supplies.
While diplomatic talks between the US and Iran continue intermittently, the US Iran drone incident highlights how quickly tensions can escalate into direct military encounters.
