The legendary musician David Bowie may soon surpass Led Zeppelin’s record for the world’s most expensive album cover photograph.
An iconic image of Bowie — captured by photographer Brian Duffy for the 1973 Aladdin Sane album — is heading to auction, where it is expected to sell for as much as £300,000 ($375,000 / 16 million TL).
If the estimate proves correct, Bowie will eclipse the current record held by Led Zeppelin’s self-titled debut album cover, which sold for $325,000 (13 million TL) in 2020.
The Iconic Lightning Bolt Image
The portrait, featuring Bowie with his face painted in the now-legendary lightning bolt makeup, is widely considered one of the most recognizable images in popular culture.
Bonhams, the auction house organizing the sale, will also offer 34 additional pieces from Duffy’s archive, including the stool Bowie sat on during the photoshoot and the photographer’s Hasselblad 500C camera.
A full-length Aladdin Sane print, used only on the first 5,000 pressings of the album, is also up for auction, expected to fetch between £150,000 and £200,000 ($190,000 – $250,000 / 6 – 8 million TL).

“The Mona Lisa of Pop”
Claire Tole-Moir, Bonhams’ Head of Popular Culture, said:
“When you think of David Bowie, this is the image that comes to mind. Outside of George Hardie’s Led Zeppelin artwork and Elton John’s Captain Fantastic cover, few others have reached this level of cultural recognition.”
Chris Duffy, son of the late photographer, has referred to the portrait as “the Mona Lisa of Pop.”
Global Cultural Legacy
The image’s cultural significance has only grown over time. The Victoria & Albert Museum’s exhibition David Bowie Is — which prominently featured the Aladdin Sane artwork — became the institution’s most visited international show, traveling from London to Toronto, São Paulo, and Tokyo.
With this upcoming sale, Bowie’s legacy as one of the most visually inventive and influential artists of the 20th century continues to shine — possibly with a new world record.
