Cat fell from ceiling — a bizarre and unsettling incident in Istanbul has resulted in a court ruling that awarded compensation to a patient injured during treatment at a private hospital. The case, which drew public attention for its unusual nature, highlighted serious concerns about patient safety and hospital responsibility.

Unbelievable Incident During Medical Treatment

The incident occurred on May 21, 2025, at a private hospital in Istanbul. The patient, identified as B.B., visited the hospital complaining of a sore throat and fatigue. After medical examinations, doctors decided to administer intravenous serum treatment, and B.B. was placed on a stretcher.

While the treatment was ongoing, an unexpected and shocking event took place. A metal ceiling panel, which had a cat hidden inside, suddenly collapsed and fell directly onto the patient. Both the metal plate and the animal struck B.B., causing panic in the treatment room.

Injuries and Emergency Medical Measures

As a result of the accident, B.B. suffered minor abrasions on the scalp. Hospital staff immediately documented the incident in an official report. Due to the risk of infection, the patient received a tetanus shot at the hospital.

However, because the cat had made contact with the patient and there was a potential rabies risk, B.B. was referred to Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital. There, doctors administered rabies vaccinations and antibody treatment as a precaution. Although the physical injuries were minor, the psychological impact and health risks were significant.

Legal Action Against the Hospital

Following recovery, B.B. decided to take legal action through attorneys İslam Gezer and Elif Büşra Berber. The legal team filed a lawsuit at the consumer court, arguing that the hospital had provided defective and unsafe medical services. They demanded 250,000 Turkish lira in moral compensation.

The case was reviewed by the Istanbul Anatolian 7th Consumer Court, which initially encouraged both sides to settle. However, no agreement was reached. The hospital’s defense requested a dismissal of the case.

Court Rules in Favor of the Patient

After examining the evidence, the court ruled that the hospital failed to provide a safe and controlled healthcare environment. The judge emphasized that hospitals must eliminate foreseeable risks related to hygiene, safety, and structural maintenance.

The court partially accepted the claim and ordered the hospital to pay 50,000 Turkish lira in moral compensation, along with legal interest, to the patient.

Lawyers Emphasize Patient Rights

Attorney İslam Gezer stated that the incident could not be considered an ordinary accident. He stressed that hospitals are obligated to ensure safety and prevent predictable risks. He also noted that the patient was forced to undergo rabies and tetanus treatments, damaging trust in healthcare services.

Attorney Elif Büşra Berber highlighted the Patient Rights Regulation, which guarantees the right to receive healthcare under conditions that respect human dignity, hygiene, and mental well-being. She emphasized that this right was clearly violated.

A Reminder for Healthcare Safety

This unusual case serves as a powerful reminder that healthcare institutions must maintain strict safety standards at all times. Even unexpected risks, when preventable, can lead to serious legal and ethical consequences.
